    BBQ

Ingredients for a fantastic BBQ - MEd TESOL way

    1 good weather prediction
1 fantastic spot in the huge field - preferably with grass, trees and access to a wide blue sky
Around 20-odd people - preferably mixed nationalities
    4 cute kids
3 disposable grills - or a medium sized portable grill
    A lighter
    10 litres of liquid
    8 kg of meat
    2 huge packet of crisps
    A frissbee or a football

First, excite and build anticipation with promises of great food. Leave it to rest for a day. Next, ensure the good weather and spot in the field is well secured. Add the 20-odd people and 4 cute kids into the mix - make sure the noise made is at a mind-blowing decibel. Throw in the grill, lighter, liquid, meat and crisps - make sure the mixture is in a frenzy mood. Finally decorate it with a frissbee or a football. To know if it is ready - the mixture has to be bubbly, smoky and filled with laughter!

That is how a good BBQ is thrown.

    Heavy or Light?

    Meeting and separation is bitter-sweet.
Meeting exudes a sunshiny colour - mixture of honey yellow with pink tint.
Separation gives out splashes of greyish dark blueish hue.
Both colours, put together, exhibit a strong contrast - life should be vivid, clear, mind and soul bewitching.

One of my principles in life is that “it is never goodbye, but see you soon”.
Very positive, sugary and cheerleader feel. Probably in huge doses would lead to toothache or diabetes.
One never knows how life would turn out and to say goodbye is like closing a chapter in life instead of allowing a continuum (this depends on context, e.g. friends and family).
In a way, it gives one an initiative or purpose to maintain the fragile connection (loaded with emotions and memories) which in these times are sorely needed.

The first person to leave was Sergi but he is still flies back for his dissertation.
    Then MJ left for London.
The first group to truly leave was my Egyptian friends. A diverse group of people which allowed me a glimpse into the Egyptian culture and at the same time allowed me to practice my smattering Arabic (to view it as a language rather than connecting it with religion which should be in the first place).
Next on the list would probably be Ruth.

I would probably leave with a heavy heart - heavy not with sadness but with all the wonderful memories created during the past one year.

    DAM

What pops into my head my I hear Amsterdam (in no particular order): -

    -    the smell of weed
    -    the ringing of the church bells or clocks
    -    the rain
    -    the canal
    -    Anne Frank
    -    friendly amsterdamers
    -    lots of bicycles
    -    Boris
    -    huge Schiphol airport
    -    van Gogh
    -    TALL people

Definitely a city one must visit. Go during April - where tulips are blossoming and the weather is dry.

    Kesunyian

    Diploma Party April 2009

Thanks to our tutor we had a fantastic diploma party. It was great just to see everyone!

The MEd TESOL 2009 Family (minus a few here and there)

The Brain Boxers: Dr Joan Cutting, Maria, Dr Brona Murphy, Leah, Yvonne Foley, Sylwia

    Brain Boxes: At work

Had a wickedly fantastic time in London. What did I do? Well I remembered entering ZARA numerous times (showcasing the tenacity of mankind when it boils down to a certain pair of shoes). Had a good deal at MNG - 20% off all products - so got myself two tees. Took a stroll at Notting Hill. The houses were so white, had fancy gates and look so magnolia-ish. Imagine ladies with coiffed hair, in nice apron and welcoming the man home from work with a peck on both cheeks sort of atmosphere. Portobello road was great especially the antiquities section. We visited Portobello during the weekdays - pro: beat the crowds, con: nothing much to see till we got to the antiques section.

Watched a musical - Wicked. It's based on a book about the Wicked Witch of West from The Wizard of Oz. I love the music and this is one of my fav musical - CATS, Blood Brothers, Grease and now Wicked. Grateful to be able to catch Keri Ellis in action - first Brit to play the role at West End. I love her representation of Elphaba. She even recorded a rock version of "Defying Gravity" with Brian May - of Queens.

Had an intellectually inspiring moment at Oxford. The buildings were short but decorated with tons of sculptures. A majority of Oxfordians cycle. Try imagining in the 1900 where you can see a teacher with his square hat and robes billowing behind him as he zips around on this black rickety bike. Yup it has that feel. We visited Oxford during the examination period and were practically barred at every college entrance. Luckily BH has a friend studying at Oxford and we managed to get into Christchurch without paying. Christchurch dining hall is the inspiration or could be the set of HP's dining hall at Hogwarts. No chance to take a peek as the porter informed the students were chin up in academic knowledge - cramming (perhaps cramming is the wrong word for the students there) for the exams. Visited the oldest room in Oxford - the Divinity Hall - used for important ceremony and was the site for the hospital in HP's first movie (only the first movie).

    Divinity Hall

Took a walk in the park. Nice. Kinda make me want to diligently do research once return home to get a shot at applying to Oxford. Lofty dreams.
Had good Korean dinner and lunch - bibimbap, kimchi stew, dukpuki, tofu stew, kimchi pancake and amazing drink of cinnamon and rice (traditional drinks of Korean - not soju). Great!

    Anyeong!

Will be looking forward to the sun in the London

I will be going to London this week for 5 day with HJ and BH.
Looking forward to watching Wicked and just taking in some sights.
    Will be away from 21 - 25th.
Coming back to a goodbye party held by the TESOL team - 28th.

    Halfway there!

I went to the optician to do a check up on my eyesight. Have been squinting at signboards in my glasses so i kinda have this uneasy feeling that my eyesight is undergoing some stress.
And ‘aye‘ for confirmation. Left slight increase of 0.5 whereas the right a major increase of 1.25.
So did order a new pair of glasses.
    *sigh*
Age is slowly creeping up on me.

    of pooches and dogs

Me and Ruth go walking every other day.
The other day, we played croquet.
It was the only day in the year where it was opened to public.
We talked about pooches, weather, flowers and just walked.
    Going walking again today!
Wonder what things that i might come across.

    d'MAC-gitized

    I have been d’Mac-gitized.

    Chocolate Bunnies and Runny Yolk

Easter break was two thumbs up.
    Yeen came up from London.
She came of Friday - hung out at three pubs and had dinner at the Malaysian restaurant. Maria came as well.
Then we went home and chatted interspersed with coughs and sniffles.
Saturday - I worked for the better part of the morning while Yeen snooze away. She hadn’t got her caffeine fix and she was supportive in allowing me to finish a big chunk of my assignment.
We went with the Richmond 7th floor mates - Chris, Steven, Thomas, & Sze Chern.
And bless the weather it was a superb sunny day. We decided to hit West Princes Street Garden to watch an Easter play.
We took part in an interactive Easter play - the last supper and of course the crucification and the resurrection of Christ.
The play took us to different parts of the park to see key moments leading to Christ’s crucification and his resurrection. The best part was climbing up the “poo” side of the castle.

Then me and yeen made a pitstop at the Elephant House. A must-do kononnya because already in Edinburgh.
Then we had dinner with the crazy and fun loving 7th floor mates - watched Britian’s Got Talent - and of course saw the currently famous Susan Boyle. There was a witch who got booted out of the show and cursed the judges. Amanda even did the cross with her fingers to supposedly ward it off. Hilarious moment. A family, Good Evans (sounded like good heavens), sang and cancelled the witch’s curse.

Britain's Got Talent is a reality show to find the next act worthy of performing in front of the Queen. Last week was bizarre, someone trying to burn off his family jewels, a drag queen doing a naval act, a parrot who was suppose to imitate his owner, a darth vader michael jackson wannabe - but of course the best act goes to the saxophonist and this young kid - 8 years old - from Cardiff.

Sunday - we went of a free tour around Edinburgh. I like it! It’s run by New Europe and have different free tours around Europe. Check out their website. Their policy is that there is no need to pay money to view the sights as it should be shared to all!

I saw John Knox graveyard which has been converted into a carpark. His graveyard is still there marked by a metal plate on the ground. Learned that Edinburgh Uni graduates would be doffed on the head with a piece of John Knox’s trousers which has gone into space. Had the shivers entering Greyfairs Kirk - a violent spirit resides in that graveyard, his tomb has been sealed off to prevent further unexplainable incidents. Heard the story of how 4 patriotic Glasgow Uni students drove all the way down to Westminster to take back the Stone of Destiny and accidentally broke it in half. This Stone weighs 152 kgs or 336 lbs. Not an easy feat to glue it back to one piece.

In the evening, we took a walk around Arthur Seat and headed to Edinburgh oldest inn - the sheep heid inn. Had bbq sausages, 2 ciders, one stout and 2 hot chocolate and saw perhaps the world’s oldest bowling alley.

Yeen had to leave on Monday but it wouldn’t be complete without a little shopping on Princes Street and people watching during lunch. It was interesting to see how people react to different situations and the language used to denote vexation and unhappiness towards the service.

the train took Yeen back to london whereas I had to catch up on the rest of my assignment.

    3rd step

    I have completed my diploma.
Now heading to get my degree.
    It’s dissertation period.

    Ahjuuma/obasan

    An aunt all over again.

My sister-in-law safely delivered a healthy baby boy today.

Am happy for the new dad and mum.

Hmmm…when is my eldest sister’s turn?

    Pulse racing

For the past two Sundays have been getting up early to catch the F1 action.

Saw Sepang thru the BBC and yes I missed the thunderstorms. Amazing lightning and thunder action.

Onwards to Shanghai! Ferrari is looking real bad at the moment. 2 thumbs up for BGP. 2 thumbs up and 2 big toes up for JB who drove superbly in Sepang.

Today watched House (S5E20). And it was a real twist. There was no indication whatsoever about someone’s death. Looking forward to the next 6 episodes. Something about House having a major breakdown and CTB having a cameo appearance.

Fringe is returning tomorrow. FINALLY after an intense wait on “of being a part of the pattern”. What is the pattern?

UB is getting to be a bit of a bore.

I wonder if there are any series worth watching.

Teehee...something to keep mind warm down after the huge bulk of reading.

Parallel to warming down after intense running.

And my hard disc is running out of space. *sigh*

    April 03

Trying to get creative juices flowing!

While trying to get ideas – I decided to type the beginning sentence of each song playing in WMP. Time wasting or Creative soul? Neither – just plain insane!

I feel it in my fingers I feel it in my soul

It’s amazing how you can speak right to my heart

Once in your life you find her

Enter by surprise, I didn’t realize

You packed in the morning, I stared out the window

I see the bad moon arising

Aruba Jamaica Ooo I want to take her

When the night has come and the land is dark

When the tough gets going, the going gets tough

    Oh my love, my darling

I am a real wild woman

How could I just let you walk away

    Who knows what tomorrow brings

    Knew the signs weren’t right

    Oh yeah

Dig if YOU will the picture

Just a steel town girl on a Saturday night

I never seen you looking so lovely as tonight

First, when there's nothing but a slow glowing dream

I have been cheated by you

Caroline laughs and it’s raining all day

    I feel good I know I would

    You better think

You never close your eyes anymore when I kiss your lips.

Turn aroundIt’s a long road when you’re on your own!
